Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A single-story house with gray vinyl siding, dark shingled gable roofs, and white-trimmed windows, set behind a partly dry green lawn under a clear blue sky.

A compressor that sits idle for most of the year and then kicks on hard when July arrives puts a specific kind of stress on the refrigerant circuit and the contactor. Homes in Strafford County, NH run cooling in a single month of the year, July. The contractor sizing a mini-split here has to get the load calculation right on the first try, because undersizing shows up fast when the system runs at full demand with no slack in the calendar. A loose line set, a poor refrigerant charge, or a badly placed head unit are not problems that hide across a light season. They surface the first hot week, before the summer is half over.

Electrical panels in much of this county's housing were sized for a different load than what a mini-split draws. Half the homes in Strafford County, New Hampshire were built in 1979 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor pricing an installation here checks the service panel and the existing wiring runs before settling on equipment, because what the house can carry determines what gets installed, not the other way around. If the panel is already at capacity, the upgrade cost enters the quote and changes it.

The Parts of a Mini-split System and What HVAC Installation Touches

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small house showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by line sets to an outdoor condenser unit beside the exterior wall, with a sofa in one room and a bed in another.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall inside the room being conditioned. It draws room air across its coil and pushes treated air back out. The outdoor unit sits on a pad or bracket outside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil, doing the heavy mechanical work of the system.

A conduit bundle runs through a small penetration in the wall to connect the two units. It carries the refrigerant lines, a condensate drain line, and the power and communication wiring. A dedicated disconnect box mounts on the exterior wall near the outdoor unit, giving the system a local shutoff point.

The drawing shows the general layout of these components, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each one applies to your house.

Licensing and Legal Requirements in Strafford County, New Hampshire

New Hampshire's mechanical licensing board issues nine credentials — hearth system, four fuel gas endorsements, domestic appliance technician, and master, journeyman and apprentice plumber — and a licensee may not work outside the specialty their licence names. None of the nine is an HVAC licence.

New Hampshire does not license HVAC as a trade, and says so where it matters: the plumbing licence expressly does not reach a person installing heating, cooling, air conditioning or domestic water heating systems, whether solar, oil, gas or electric. The gas piping on a gas-fired system is a separate matter and needs a fuel gas fitter licence.
